Panthers come home with third-place trophy
Mead made good use of the number three.
The Panthers, making their first state appearance since 2002, got goals from three different players in a 3-1 win over Lake Stevens Saturday to take home the third-place trophy in the State 4A boys soccer tournament in Sumner, Wash.
Mead (18-5), which had only registered four goals in the first three games of state play, opened the offense in the 13th minute when junior forward Aaron Malmoe scored.
Michael Shriver, a junior midfielder, added to the lead 5 minutes later, netting in the 18th minute and sending the Panthers into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Junior defender Tim Doggett made it a 3-0 game in the 55th minute, ensuring Mead its first trophy since a fourth-place finish in 2002.
Lake Stevens (18-4) got on the board late in the match, with Kyle Warrington scoring in the 72nd minute.
