Giants out of Memorial Cup
MONCTON, New Brunswick – The Vancouver Giants, the B.C. Division and Western Hockey League champions, bowed out of the MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament with a 3-1 loss to the Moncton Wildcats on Friday.
Matt Marquardt scored what proved to be the winning goal in the third period of the semifinal game.
The host team will take on the Quebec Remparts in the title game Sunday in the first all-QMJHL final in the history of the Memorial Cup.
Moncton scored first in the second period on Keith Yandle’s goal. Vancouver’s Gilbert Brule, the tournament scoring leader, tied the game midway through the period.
Marquardt broke the tie early in the third period with his first goal of the tournament.
Christian Gaudet completed the scoring with an empty-net goal.
