State 4A/3A track
Edgar Brown Stadium, Pasco, Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
Greater Spokane League athletes are going to have to settle for chasing medals, not trophies, in 4A because no school qualified enough athletes to seriously compete for team titles. Best bets to be on the top of the podium are Cameron Elisara of Ferris, the state leader and defending champion in the shot put, and Mt. Spokane’s Megan O’Reilly, the state leader in the 1,600 and 3,200. Mead’s Nikki Codd (800) and Ferris’ Kelly McNamee (high jump) are also hot on the heels of favorites.
Team trophies are a distinct possibility for the East Valley boys and North Central girls in 3A. EV has good potential with nine individuals, particularly Anthony Laborin (sprints), Nick Atwood (distances) and Tyler Jolley (throws), and two relays. West Valley-Yakima should be around at the end along with Columbia River. Led by Bob Wilske (four events) and hurdler Tyreil Poosri, Cheney could get some hardware. NC returns points from last year’s second-place team in Anna Walters (sprints, two relays), Mary Graesser (distances), Ashlee Michelson (throws) and pole vaulters Kendall Mays and Krista Hoffman. Potential contenders Holy Names, the defending champion, Issaquah and Rainier Beach are sprint heavy, which could dilute points and makes the relays critical.
