Manager of Lewiston port harbors tourism hopes

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

LEWISTON – The manager of Idaho’s only seaport says the area could be turned into a busy tourist area with a spot for cruise ships, a variety of trendy shops, a water taxi and a riverside RV park.

“It’s an idea,” David Doeringsfeld told a Lewiston city task force on growth, the Lewiston Tribune reported.

He said a wharf could be built on the Clearwater River where a pedestrian overpass is being constructed. The wharf could handle cruise ships and would include specialty shops like those at Pike Place Market in Seattle.

Doeringsfeld said the port is gradually buying up land the port holds options on with the $450,000 in property tax money the port receives each year. He estimated that would take about three or four years.
