Shock sign former Hurricane
Former University of Miami flanker Kevin Beard has been added to the Spokane Shock arenafootball2 roster, the team announced Friday.
To make room for Beard, wide receiver/defensive back Orlando Winston was placed on reassignment.
In three years at Miami, Beard had 67 catches for 920 yards and seven touchdowns for the Hurricanes, despite a series of injuries in his junior and senior seasons.
After college, Beard signed a free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills and was released before the 2004 season. Beard played briefly for Shock head coach Chris Siegfried with the South Georgia Wildcats before being sidelined with an ankle injury.
Track and field
The Washington State Cougars opened the outdoor season by winning five events at the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
Sophomore Jon Jeffreys, a West Valley High School graduate, won the men’s javelin with an NCAA regional-qualifying and personal-best toss of 213 feet, 4 inches.
Senior James McSwain won the men’s 200-meter dash with a regional-qualifying time of 21.19 seconds, while junior John Cassleman, a Pullman High grad, won the men’s 400 hurdles with a regional-qualifying time of 51.83.
Freshman Catie Schuetzle, a Shadle Park grad, won the women’s long jump with a regional-qualifying distance of 19-6. Senior Jenna Dean won the women’s javelin with a regional-qualifying throw of 160-8.

•Michael Tucker won the decathlon and Sarah Marken captured the heptathlon for Whitworth during the school’s multievent meet at Boppel Track.
Tucker, in his first decathlon, had the best 110-meter hurdles, 1,500 and javelin to top a field of three with 4,847 points.
Marken, third place after the first day, had the best long jump and javelin and scored 4,171 points to lead a field of six.
Swimming
Whitworth’s Loren Killgore finished 13th in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4 minutes, 4.91 seconds at the NCAA Division III men’s swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
David Dolphay placed 36th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.76.
•Washington State junior Erin McCleave broke her school record in the 200 freestyle by clocking a 21st-place 1:48.09 at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Athens, Ga.
Baseball
Gonzaga University’s game with Washington State was rained out at the Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif.
The game was rescheduled for this morning at 8.
WSU will follow that with a game against Miami (Ohio) at 11 a.m., while Gonzaga will play Binghamton at 2 p.m.
Softball
The North Idaho Cardinals swept visiting Snow College 2-0, 3-1 to get back to the .500 mark in Scenic West Athletic Conference play in Lewiston.
Golf
Eastern Washington University freshman Chloe Nelson was named Big Sky Conference women’s golfer of the week after tying for 39th during the UNLV Spring Invitational, which concluded Wednesday.
•Circling Raven Golf Club in Worley, Idaho, will open April 1.
Practice facilities will open to the public on March 25.
