Sandpoint’s Rosholt finalist
OKLAHOMA CITY – Powered by three champions on the verge of defending their titles, Oklahoma State racked up enough points to win the NCAA wrestling championship Friday night.
As long as the Cowboys can avoid losing points by penalties or disqualifications today, the tournament’s final day, a fourth straight national title will be theirs.
Jake Rosholt of Sandpoint, Johny Hendricks and Steve Mocco won their semifinal matches and a chance to defend their titles as Oklahoma State surged ahead for a 33 1/2-point lead entering the final round.
Minnesota is in second place with 72 1/2 points. Oklahoma is third with 64 1/2 followed by Iowa at 61 1/2.
Of the three Cowboys to reach the finals, Rosholt’s win at 197 pounds came in the most dramatic fashion. He pinned unseeded Chris Weidman of Hofstra in 1 minute, 8 seconds and will face Penn State’s Phil Davis in the championship match today.
He’ll be seeking his third NCAA title, after winning it in 2003 and last year.
“It would be a real big accomplishment,” Rosholt said. “It’s always been a goal of mine to be an NCAA champion. Then you start out as a freshman and win one, all you can do is do it again.”
