Vandals fall in two overtimes

From News Services The Spokesman-Review

Kenny Wilson hit a 3-pointer and two free throws in the final 51 seconds of the second overtime, and Eric Lane scored a game-high 24 points to lead Boise State to an 85-80 Western Athletic Conference basketball victory over Idaho on Saturday.

Boise State tied the game at 63 with 8.3 seconds left in regulation when Lane hit a field goal. Idaho went up 72-69 with 1:22 left in the first overtime on a field goal and free throw by Tanoris Shepard, who ended the game with a team-high 23 points.

Lane hit three free throws and a 3-pointer and Shepard scored a field goal to put the Vandals ahead 74-73. Boise State’s Coby Karl converted 1 of 2 free throws with 4.8 seconds left to send the game into a second overtime.

With Idaho ahead 80-78 on a field goal by David Dubois with 1:02 left in the second overtime, Wilson hit the 3-pointer, Karl converted two free throws and Wilson hit his pair from the line to give the Broncos the victory and dash Idaho’s hopes of ending a 13-game road losing streak.

“It’s no tougher than any of the other 20-something losses we’ve had this season … they all hurt the same,” Idaho head coach Leonard Perry said. “I am happy that the kids have continued to improve throughout the course of the season and that is a testament of their character.”

The Vandals head to the WAC tournament as the No. 8 seed and will face champion Nevada on Thursday at 6 p.m. PST at Reno, Nev. Idaho finished in ninth place, but sixth-place Fresno State is ineligible for the tournament.
