Indians grab first victory of season

The Spokesman-Review

EUGENE, Ore. – The Spokane Indians hit the road running on Saturday night.

Jose Jaimes allowed just one run in five innings and Spokane earned its first win of the season – after opening 0-5 at home – by beating the Eugene Emeralds 6-2 in Northwest League baseball action.

The Indians gave Jaimes (1-1) some breathing room by scoring three runs in the first inning.

Craig Gentry led off with a single and stole second. Wally Backman Jr. singled to score Gentry. Steve Marquardt doubled home Backman and Chad Tracy plated Marquardt with a one-out single.

Jaimes, who allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out four, surrendered his lone run in the bottom of the fourth.

Spokane answered with a run in the top of the fifth on Backman’s sacrifice fly. The Indians added two runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Chris Kemp and Thomas Berkery.
