Farden, Ort pitch RiverHawks to triumph in home opener

Luke Farden took a no-hitter into the fifth inning Saturday as the Spokane RiverHawks, playing their home opener, defeated the Bend Elks 3-1 in West Coast Collegiate Baseball League play at Avista Stadium.

Farden (1-1) struck out eight and received relief help from Cale Ort, who pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings for the save.

Paul Martin of Spokane (4-3) had a leadoff triple in the first and scored on Darin Holcomb’s groundout. Brent Mertens had a sacrifice fly and Chris Bozo an RBI single in Spokane’s sixth.

The RiverHawks and Bend (2-5) will play a doubleheader today at Avista starting at noon.

Football

J.C. Sherritt of Pullman rushed for 85 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries to help the East to a 40-25 win over the West in the 2A/1A/B All-Star Football Classic at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

Sherritt’s 20-yard TD run in the fourth quarter gave the East a 40-13 lead.

The East led 22-6 when Sherritt’s Greyhounds teammate, Ashton Gant, broke free for a 20-yard TD catch with 1 minute, 28 seconds left in the first half.

The defense forced a three-and-out, allowing Freeman’s Andrew Wilkerson to kick a 35-yard field goal before halftime.

Women’s golf

Washington State University incoming junior Tracy Broders won the 97th Oregon Amateur at Portland Golf Club.

Broders defeated Johnna Nealy 4 and 2 in the 36-hole match-play final.
