Reigning champ Texas sent packing at home
AUSTIN, Texas – Eliminating the defending national champions just wasn’t enough.
First North Carolina State defeated Texas 6-3 Sunday, eliminating the national champion Longhorns from their own college baseball regional; but N.C. State was eliminated later in the day when Stanford defeated the Wolfpack 17-7 to advance to the Super Regionals for the sixth time.
Chris Minaker had five hits, two RBIs and scored six runs, and Michael Taylor added a two-run homer to lead Stanford.
Stanford led 11-7 before a six-run ninth inning sealed its victory. The Cardinal had a season-high 24 hits and 17 runs. Austin Yount (4-0) earned the win for Stanford, giving up only two runs on one hit in 3 1/3 innings.
Chris Engle (1-1) gave up two runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings for N.C. State.
Earlier, Jonathan Diaz had an RBI double and Matt Camp doubled in the eighth inning as the Wolfpack defeated Texas.
Hunter Harris tied things up for the Longhorns in the seventh with an RBI double. But Texas reliever Randy Boone couldn’t hold off North Carolina State during its three-run eighth inning.
Wolfpack starter Gib Hobson (10-2) had a complete game, giving up five hits and three runs.
