Ranch, Spam, yeast, recipes? They’re all Fair game

Along with blue-ribbon bragging rights, there’s some cash at stake at this year’s Spokane County Interstate Fair.

Hidden Valley Ranch, Ghirardelli, Fleischmann’s Yeast and Spam are sponsoring recipe contests with money prizes in addition to the traditional fair categories. The deadline for entries is Aug. 8.

Details for each competition can be found in the fair exhibitor’s guide, online at www.spokanecounty.org/faircq or by calling the fair office at (509) 477-2772. Here are some of the highlights:

“ There’s a $200 top prize in the Hidden Valley dressing “Family Friendly Food Contest.” Second and third place receive $100 and $50 respectively. The top winner advances to the national competition to vie for a $1,000 grand prize. Recipes will be rated on family appeal, taste, appearance and ease of preparation.

“ Ghirardelli will give $150 to first- and second-place winners who create irresistible chocolate recipes using at least one of its products. The third-prize winner takes home $50. The recipes will be evaluated for originality, appearance and ease of preparation.

“ Fleischmann’s Yeast is sponsoring the “Best Ever Baking Contest.” Top prize is $150, second place earns $75 and third receives $50. Recipes for all baked goods using Fleischmann’s yeast are welcome and will be evaluated for flavor, appearance, texture and creativity.

“ Children and adults are invited to enter the “The Great American Spam Championships” for a chance to win up to $150 at the fair. The winning adult recipe will be entered into the national competition for a chance to win $3,000. One national “Spam Kid Chef of the Year” will be selected from the youth winners to receive a $2,000 grand prize.
