When Fred Carter walks through his Spokane garden, he takes a stroll through a lifetime of memories. The gardens were created when the house, the original Wessel estate, was built in 1905.

Carter’s parents purchased the house in 1945 and lived there until their deaths. Carter inherited the house two years ago and has set about bringing the gardens back to their original glory.

“This is just a quarter or half an acre,” Carter says. “But it feels much larger.”

The shrubs and perennials are bordered by the original rock walls. The property includes a rock tower.

“At one time, the tower had a wonderful view of the city,” Carter says. “But of course, the trees have grown much taller over the years.”

When Carter’s mother died the family held a memorial service for her in the garden. Friends and family brought roses to be planted in her memory.

“We planted 56 roses,” Carter says. “It was a wonderful tribute.”

Carter feels very fortunate to be able to live in the house where he grew up.

“This house has always been full of wonderful memories,” Carter says. “It’s great place to stay and live.”
