Indians fall to 2nd place as Dust Devils sweep
PASCO – The Tri-City Dust Devils broke out the brooms on Monday night at Dust Devils Stadium.
Matthew Repec delivered a sacrifice fly with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Tri-City a 3-2 victory and a three-game sweep over the Spokane Indians in Northwest League play.
Brett Zamzow was saddled with the loss for Spokane (9-13), which fell into a second-place tie with the Dust Devils, one game behind Boise in the East Division after the Hawks edged last-place Yakima 2-1.
Zamzow, who entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and struck out the side, fell to 0-1 on the season.
Some sloppy play by the Dust Devils aided the Indians’ cause early in the game.
Spokane jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Thomas Berkery was hit by a pitch and Wally Backman Jr. followed with a walk. With two outs and Steve Marquardt at the plate Dust Devils starter Ramon Rodriguez threw wild on a pickoff attempt and Berkery scored from second base.
Spokane stretched its lead to 2-0 in the second. Chris Davis drew a one-out walk, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Billy Killian.
T-C bounced back against Indians starter Michael Ballard with a two-run third inning. Joshua Banda and Anthony Jackson singled and scored on a triple by Michael McKenry.
