University SCOPE – Volunteers discussed two upcoming fundraisers. They will be staffing the Sprague rest stop on I-90 July 25-27. Volunteers also will be at Ron’s Drive-In on Aug. 15. There will be a classic car show and the group will get a portion of the sales between 5 and 8 p.m. (Source: Vice president Carol Snider)

Fairfield City Council – Spokane County Sheriff candidate Cal Walker spoke about his campaign. A public hearing was held on the town’s six-year transportation improvement program. Council members discussed the pedestrian bridge design and calls for service with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office for January through March. The council also discussed hiring off-duty police officers to patrol the town, but made no decision on the issue. A few citizens attended the meeting to speak against the chemical used to spray for mosquitoes. The council will review the issue. An economic development workshop is set for next Saturday at the Fairfield Community Center. Several council members plan to attend. The event is open to the public. (Source: Town clerk Sue Adams)
