Indians take victory in 12

A 12th-inning home run by Spokane’s Chris Davis gave the Indians an 11-9 victory against the Yakima Bears on Thursday night in Northwest League baseball play in front of a crowd of 3,874 at Avista Stadium.

With one runner on and two outs, Davis homered over the right-field fence.

A two-out, ninth-inning balk allowed the Indians to tie the score in the ninth and overcome five errors.

Spokane started the ninth-inning rally with three straight hits from Chad Tracy, Chris Kemp and Steven Marquardt. Thomas Berkery’s groundout brought in Tracy and Craig Pfautz’s balk brought home pinch-runner Johnny Washington to tie the score.

Yakima dinged Spokane starting pitcher Wandy Morla in the second inning, posting three hits and two runs.

Spokane evened the score in the third with a two-run home run over the left-field wall by Tracy, which scored Grant Gerrard. Tracy leads the Indians with three home runs.

Yakima added a run in the fourth. The Indians answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Berkery doubled and stole third. Brian Nelson was hit by a pitch. Berkery scored on Jay Heafner’s single and Nelson scored on a ground ball hit by Gerrard. Designated hitter Nick Cadena then ripped a ball up the middle scoring Heafner.

The game continued to seesaw into the fifth when the Indians relieved Morla with Craig Crow, and the Bears came up with four runs. The Bears opened with a base hit from designated hitter Edwin Roman who stole second and was knocked in by Lester Contreras’ double to the right-field wall. A wild pitch scored Contreras, who advanced to third on a base hit by Shane Byrne, evening the score at 5 and forcing Spokane to make another pitching change.

Yakima reclaimed the lead against reliever Glen Swanson when Joey Side reached on an infield error that scored Byrne. Cyle Hankerd singled in Sharpe. After cycling through 10 batters, the Bears were retired and Yakima led 7-5.

Spokane battled back with two doubles in the sixth inning. Heafner opened with the first and scored from Gerrard’s single to right field. Gerrard advanced to second on the throw to home and stole third. He was knocked in by Tracy’s double to the left-field wall, tying the score at 7.

Yakima added single runs in the seventh and eighth for a 9-7 lead.
