The Spokesman-Review

Second baseman Jose Lopez and right fielder Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners were named to the American League All-Star team on Sunday. Suzuki was voted a starter by the fans, while Lopez was selected as a reserve in a vote of players throughout the league.

It’s the first selection for Lopez and sixth in a row for Suzuki, 32. The game is July 11 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Lopez, 22, put together a stellar first half in his first full season at the major-league level. After Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Colorado, the 22-year-old is hitting .282 with nine home runs and 57 RBIs, while hitting in the No. 3 spot of the Mariners’ batting order. He also had 20 doubles and seven triples.

Suzuki is hitting .359 and is well on his way to another 200-hits season with 127. Suzuki finished third in the voting for outfielders, behind Boston’s Manny Ramirez and the Angels’ Vladimir Guerrero.
