No. 12 West Virginia holds on to beat UCLA

Mike Gansey scored 24 points and No. 12 West Virginia survived a furious rally to beat No. 18 UCLA 60-56 Saturday at Los Angeles for its 12th straight victory.

The Mountaineers (14-3) led by 20 points early in the second half, but saw their lead shrink to three in the final 2 minutes.

The Bruins (15-4) missed 3-pointers by Arron Afflalo and Jordan Farmar, then Farmar had the ball stripped by Gansey, who got fouled and hit a free throw before time expired.

Farmar scored 22 points for UCLA, which outscored the Mountaineers 29-13 over the final 14:43. Afflalo was held to four points. Ryan Hollins and Darren Collison added 11 points each.

Arizona 60, California 55

Hassan Adams had 16 points and nine rebounds, and the Wildcats dominated the boards against the bigger Bears to escape with a victory at Tucson, Ariz.

Leon Powe had 23 points and 13 rebounds for Cal in the Bears’ 11th consecutive loss at McKale Center. They haven’t won at Arizona since 1995.

Ivan Radinovic had 10 points and nine rebounds. His two free throws with 16 seconds to go put Arizona (12-6 overall, 5-3 Pac-10) ahead 57-53. Powe’s inside basket cut the lead to 57-55, then Cal (10-6, 4-3) had a chance to tie it after Adams made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 58-55 with 8.1 seconds to play.

But Ayinde Ubaka missed an open 3-pointer and Adams made a pair of free throws with a second remaining to seal Arizona’s 14th victory over Cal in their last 15 meetings.

Stanford 70, Arizona St. 64

Matt Haryasz had a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds, and the Cardinal (8-7, 4-3) held off the Sun Devils at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (7-10, 1-7) were led by Jeff Pendergraph’s 14 points, also all in the first half. Kevin Kruger had 13 and Serge Atuahene 11.
