When it comes to gadgetry, much of “Star Trek” has already come true.

Today, we take sliding double doors with motion sensors for granted, not on our starship bridges but in our supermarkets. We’ve used, abused and abandoned by the hundreds the floppy disk, whose earliest public incarnation was in the thick, Day-Glo squares that Spock and Dr. McCoy used to access information from the Enterprise’s mainframe computer.
