Man back in jail two days after his release

A 23-year-old Spokane man, who was just released from jail Tuesday, now faces an attempted murder charge in connection with a Thursday morning shooting.

Spokane police arrested Jaycee Carrywater at 3328 E. Bridgeport about eight hours after finding a 25-year-old man who had been shot in the groin, police spokesman Dick Cottam said. The victim was listed in satisfactory condition at an area hospital.

The victim was hit with only one bullet, but police said Carrywater may have emptied his gun clip, which could have had as many as six bullets in it.

Carrywater and the victim are acquaintances, Cottam said. It was unknown how they came in contact prior to the shooting.

Police responded about 3:30 a.m. to North Crestline and East Rowan, where the wounded man was found, Cottam said. The suspect had fled the area.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, Spokane police Sgt. Joe Peterson said.

Police tracked Carrywater to the residence on East Bridgeport about 1 p.m. Thursday, Cottam said. Detectives learned he was in the house with a 2-year-old child and prepared for a standoff. However, Carrywater left the home and was arrested without incident.

During a search of the home, police found the weapon they think was used in the shooting, a large-caliber semiautomatic, as well as a sawed-off shotgun, Peterson said.

A marijuana growing operation was also found during the search at the East Bridgeport residence, police said. The home is just a block and a half away from Cooper Elementary School, which was placed in lockdown at one point because of the police activity.

Veronica Marry, 29, Carrywater’s girlfriend and a resident of the home, was charged with manufacture of a controlled substance.

Carrywater and the shooting victim each have extensive criminal records, Cottam said.

Last year, Carrywater was convicted of several criminal charges, including second-degree malicious mischief, first- and second-degree theft, third-degree assault and domestic abuse, according to court records.

Two convictions stemmed from Carrywater’s role in a vehicle theft in October of last year, in which the owner of a Ford Explorer was dragged behind her vehicle.

On Thursday, Carrywater was booked into Spokane County Jail on the latest charge.
