Moran Prairie submitted for honors

Kandis Carperkandis Carper The Spokesman-Review

Moran Prairie Elementary School has been nominated for the 2005-‘06 federal Blue Ribbon School award.

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction office has nominated the South Side school because of its outstanding WASL scores.

Moran Prairie ranked fourth for its math score, sixth for reading and ninth for writing among nearly 2,000 public schools in the state.

Because the school scored in the top 10 percent on state tests, it met the criteria for nomination.

The U.S. Department of Education will review each state’s nominations and announce the winners in fall 2006.

The last Spokane County school to be chosen for Blue Ribbon status was Franklin Elementary in 2004.

St. George’s takes solo awards

Six students from St. George’s School won their solo divisions at the Eastern Washington Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Competition for local high school students Feb. 11.

Vocal winners were Lauren Kirby, mezzo soprano; C.D. Trail, tenor; MacKenzie Trail, soprano; Ashley Vancurler, alto and Michael Wilhelm, baritone.

Each qualified for the state competition at Ellensburg in April.

St. George’s student Emily Stratton won the solo violin division.
