Two recent Opinion page commentaries about lobbyist Jack Abramoff call for correction and clarification.
•A Jan. 6 editorial stated incorrectly that former Congressman George Nethercutt of Spokane was the only member of Washington’s congressional delegation to receive funds directly from Abramoff. In fact, Abramoff contributed $500 to 4th District Rep. Richard “Doc” Hastings on Nov. 7, 1997.
•Syndicated columnist Cal Thomas said in a column published here Saturday that some Democrats criticizing Republicans over the current lobbying scandal “have, themselves, taken money from Abramoff.” Thomas explains that he was referring not to direct contributions but to Abramoff’s having directed funds to various Democrats through his clients. Thomas cites this Washington Post Web site for more details about Abramoff’s influence in the clients’ decisions: blogs.washingtonpost.com/ washpostblog/2006/01/abramoff_covera.
