In brief: Arizona police arrest Tyson on drug offense

Mike Tyson was released from jail without bond on a felony drug possession charge Friday in Scottsdale, Ariz., after an early-morning arrest in which police said they found two bags of white powder in his back pocket.

Tyson was arrested, after nearly ramming a police SUV, on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine when police stopped him shortly after he left a Scottsdale nightclub.

Suppan deal finalized

National League Championship Series MVP Jeff Suppan, who pitched for St. Louis, and the Milwaukee Brewers finalized their $42 million, four-year contract.

“The Florida Marlins and infielder Aaron Boone agreed to a $925,000, one-year contract.

Hawaii coach will retire

Hawaii men’s basketball coach Riley Wallace announced that he will retire at the end of this season.

The 65-year-old Wallace said he will step down after 20 seasons with the Warriors, when his contract expires April 30.

“Scotty Glacken, 62, Georgetown’s football coach for 23 seasons and a standout quarterback for Duke in the 1960s, died Wednesday night. The school did not release a cause of death. He lived in Bethesda, Md.

“Matt Lubick has been added to the staff of new Arizona State football coach Dennis Erickson as safeties coach and recruiting coordinator.

“Notre Dame starting basketball guard Kyle McAlarney was arrested on a marijuana possession charge.

Bedard remains jailed

Canadian Olympic gold-medalist biathlete Myriam Bedard will remain jailed in Baltimore while awaiting extradition to Canada to face charges of parental child abduction and violation of a custody order, a U.S. federal judge said.

“Austria’s Michael Walchhofer won a World Cup downhill race for the second straight day in Bormio, Italy.

Olympic downhill gold medalist Antoine Deneriaz of France injured his right knee in the event and will be out for three weeks.

“Sweden’s Therese Borssen earned her first World Cup victory in a slalom race in Semmering, Austria.

Woods will skip opener

Tiger Woods decided not to play next week in the PGA Tour’s season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship, the second straight elite tournament he has skipped.

“Sam Chapman, the two-sport star who led the University of California to its last Rose Bowl victory in 1938 and went on to play the outfield for the Philadelphia Athletics, has died at 90 in Kentfield, Calif.

“Defenseman Kris Russell scored two goals to lead Canada past Germany 3-1 in Leksand, Sweden, securing a semifinal berth in the world junior hockey tournament.
