Sonics’ Lewis out 2 months

Rashard Lewis, the Seattle SuperSonics’ second-leading scorer, is expected to miss at least two months because of a torn hand tendon.

The 6-foot-10 forward was to have surgery on his right hand Friday, the team said. An MRI on Thursday revealed an injury to the tendon sheath on the back of his hand.

He caught his hand in the net trying to block Erick Dampier’s shot in the opening minutes of Wednesday night’s game against Dallas. He was taken to the locker room for X-rays, which were negative.

Lewis, a 2005 All-Star, is averaging 21.9 points and could become a free agent after the season. He leads the Sonics in 3-point shooting (40.3 percent) and double-doubles (six) after starting the team’s first 27 games.

Air Force names former player

NFL assistant Troy Calhoun was hired as Air Force’s football coach, returning to the academy to succeed Fisher DeBerry.

Calhoun left the Denver Broncos’ staff to join Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans this season. He graduated from Air Force in 1989 and is the first former Falcons player to coach the team.

DeBerry retired last week after 23 years as Air Force’s coach. Calhoun is only the sixth head coach for Air Force, joining a list that includes Bill Parcells and Ken Hatfield.

The 38-year-old Calhoun played quarterback at Air Force.

Griffey breaks hand at home

Ken Griffey Jr. broke his left hand in an accident at home, the latest in a series of injuries that have derailed the career of the All-Star outfielder.

Griffey’s throwing hand will be in a hard cast for three weeks, then will be re-examined, Cincinnati Reds spokesman Rob Butcher said.

Butcher said he could not say when or how the accident occurred because Griffey did not authorize any more details to be released.

The outfielder, 37, has been severely limited by injuries since he joined his hometown team before the 2000 season. He missed nearly a month early last season because of inflammation behind his right knee, and sat out 22 of the last 24 games after dislocating a toe.

Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen withdrew from next month’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, saying she is taking a temporary break from competition.

Cohen plans to skate at the 2009 world championships in Los Angeles and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
