Redmon lifts Mt. Spokane

Addressing his team Thursday night, Mt. Spokane basketball coach Bill Ayers courteously reminded his players they still had four days to shop for his Christmas present.

An upset victory over Shadle Park may have to suffice.

Kyle Redmon knocked down a turnaround jumper with 6 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the host Wildcats to a 42-40 win over the Highlanders in a Greater Spokane League contest.

The Wildcats (4-3) collected their first win against a team with a winning record. They reside one loss out of third place in the GSL, but they’ve alternated wins and losses in a bout of season-long inconsistency.

Shadle (6-2) slipped out of a second-place tie with Mead and remains one-half game ahead of Gonzaga Prep.

Anthony Brown, who led the Highlanders with a game-high 18 points, made 1 of 2 free throws to knot the score at 40 with a 1 1/2 minutes remaining in the second overtime. Mt. Spokane wound the clock down before Redmon secured a pass, wheeled around and fired a 15-footer that swished through the net with 6.3 seconds left.

Shadle point guard Leo Avila broke the Wildcats’ ensuing press and located Brown open in the left corner, but Brown’s 3-point attempt was short at the buzzer.

A senior, Redmon said he had missed a similar shot earlier in the game, but he felt he could use his 6-foot-2 frame to exploit his height advantage over his defender.

“I saw the time running down, and I didn’t know (Ayers) was going to call the play for me,” said Redmon, who tallied a team-best 15 points. “I went to get the ball, and I didn’t want to leave too much time left on the clock. I think I still left 6 seconds, though.”

Shadle led 10-6 after the first quarter, but Mt. Spokane outscored the Highlanders in each of the next three quarters to force OT. Redmon scored seven consecutive points to turn a 23-17 deficit into a one-point lead with 4:54 left in the third quarter, the Wildcats’ first lead since 3-2.

Avila missed a 3-point attempt with 8 seconds left, and Mt. Spokane’s Ryan Selland missed a shot from halfcourt at the buzzer to leave both teams tied at 33 at the end of regulation.

The Wildcats couldn’t finish around the basket on two attempts in the last 4 seconds of the first OT, the teams knotted at 38.

Selland made several timely shots for Mt. Spokane and finished with 13 points.

Ferris 80, Rogers 43: The Saxons (8-0) reached the holiday break with a game lead in the GSL. They were ahead of the visiting Pirates (3-5) by 21 points at intermission before making all 12 of their shots in the third quarter. Four players ended in double figures, including DeAngelo Casto with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Beau Brett had a season-high 12. Rogers is playing without injured scoring leader Scotty Livengood.

Mead 55, East Valley 49: Brendan Ingebritsen’s shooting enabled the Panthers (7-1) to break a 37-37 third quarter tie against the upset-minded visitors. He finished with 19 points. The Knights (1-7) hit 19 of 33 shots from the field, led by Josh Peck’s 14 points.

Gonzaga Prep 45, North Central 37: The Bullpups (5-2) led by only a basket with a minute left, but held off the visiting Indians (2-6). Three Prep players finished in double figures, led by Beau Azadganian’s 14.
