Better shooting skills not answer

In response to the Dec. 14 Vocal Point (Security lies in the heart, and the gun cabinet), I found the article to be disturbing.

Though that author experienced extreme violation and misfortune by being robbed, I do not condone the use of guns in any situation. This proclamation comes after 10-plus years of working at USC/Los Angeles County Medical Center, where I witnessed the countless use of guns for defense.

The author refers to the armed state her uncle in the Philippines must perpetuate to protect his family, yet guns continually cause fear and endanger his loved ones at every living moment. How can anyone feel secure with weapons that kill and maim human life?

The author states no one can steal your memories. But it is apparent to me that she is consumed with material wealth. I feel sorry for this woman who is brushing up on shooting skills to defend that. A much more productive response would be pursuing the avenues to change the acts of “criminals,” such as education, generosity and understanding, which would ultimately make life better for all on this earth.
