Whitworth overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to defeat Dominican 64-60 in women’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Fieldhouse, becoming the only unbeaten team at the 2006 Quality Inn – Whit Classic.

Alida Bower, who was named tournament MVP, scored 14 for the Pirates (7-2), while Susan McDaniel and Cassie Snyder each added 10. Lola Brown led all scorers, putting up 21 points for the Penguins (7-7).

In the first game of the tournament on Sunday, Whitman (4-4) edged Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (3-4) 49-46.

Joining Bower on the all-tournament team were fellow Pirate Natalie Orrell, Jocelyn Woolsey (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps), Katie Patneaude (Whitman), Lola Browne (Dominican), and Alisha Flaaten (Dominican).

•The Gonzaga Bulldogs fell 75-60 to No. 21 Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis.

Stephanie Hawk scored 15 points for the Bulldogs (7-7) and Michelle Elliott and Rachel Kane each added 11. But Gonzaga couldn’t stop Krystal Ellis, who scored 29 points for the Golden Eagles (10-1).

•Washington State’s Ebonee Coates tied the WSU single-game record for blocked shots with six, as the Cougars took a 72-70 overtime decision against Northwestern State in Pullman.

The win was the third in the last four for the Cougars (4-6). The Lady Demons fell to 4-5.

In addition to Coates’ six blocked shots, she pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds.

Nakejia Kelly led the Cougars in scoring with 14 points and Kate Benz secured 16 rebounds for WSU.

•Led by 18 points apiece from Cameo Hicks and Andrea Plouffe, the Washington won its fourth straight game with an 84-65 upset over No. 23 Florida State in Seattle.

The Huskies are now 7-4 and handed the Seminoles just their second loss of the season against 10 wins.

Hicks added nine rebounds, six assists and four steals, to go along with her 18 points. Cheri Craddock scored in double figures as well for the Huskies, tallying 15 points.

Men’s basketball

The Community Colleges of Spokane men’s basketball team defeated Clackamas 92-80 at the NWAACC Crossover Tournament in Oregon City, Ore.

Eric Beal led the Sasquatch with 23 points while five others scored in double figures.

CCS hit 11 of 23 shots from three-point range and shot 54 percent from the field overall.

The Sasquatch finished in third place for the tournament.

College football

Beau Baldwin, offensive coordinator at EWU, has applied for the head coaching position at his alma mater, Central Washington.

The Central job opened when long-time CWU coach John Zamberlain, a former NFL linebacker and EWU assistant, was named head coach at Idaho State on Friday.
