LaDainian Tomlinson broke Shaun Alexander’s NFL single-season touchdown record of 28 when he scored three times Sunday in the San Diego Chargers’ game against the Denver Broncos.

With the fans chanting for Tomlinson, the star running back took a handoff from Philip Rivers and scored on a 6-yard run with 3:57 left to tie it.

After Denver fumbled, Tomlinson got No. 29 on a 7-yard run just 47 seconds later.

Tomlinson’s teammates carried him to the sideline as he held the ball aloft in one hand and held up an index finger in the other.

The crowd was chanting “L.T., L.T.,” as he was mobbed by the other Chargers, who clinched the AFC West title with the victory.

Tomlinson has 26 TDs rushing and three receiving. He’s also thrown for two touchdowns this year, but they don’t count toward his personal scoring total.

Alexander set the record last season for Seattle.

Super Bowl forecast calling for Purple Rain

McCartney, Jagger and now Prince.

For the third year in a row, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act will headline the Super Bowl halftime entertainment. This time it’s Prince.

The Purple One, winner of six Grammy Awards and nominated for five more this year, will play at the game in Miami on Feb. 4.

The Super Bowl, which will be televised by CBS, is annually television’s highest rated show. An estimated 141 million people watched last year’s game between Pittsburgh and Seattle.

Prince gained attention early in his career with raunchy lyrics and racy performances, but has toned down his act somewhat in recent years.

Harrison joins elite 1,000-catch club

Marvin Harrison became the fourth player in NFL history with 1,000 receptions, joining Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and Cris Carter.

Harrison caught a 13-yard pass from Peyton Manning early in the fourth quarter to join the elite.

It was his 73rd catch of the season, but it came with little fanfare because the Colts were trailing 37-10.

The 34-yard-old Harrison, who also surpassed 1,000 yards receiving for the season, is on pace for his eighth consecutive season with at least 80 catches and 1,000 yards recieving.

Falcons Dunn, Norwood sidelined

The Atlanta Falcons, who boast the NFL’s top rushing offense, lost a pair of running backs to injury within a span of five plays in the third quarter of their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

First, Warrick Dunn limped off the field with a calf injury after a 9-yard gain. Four plays later, Jerious Norwood injured his right knee, but was able to walk off the field on his own power.

Falcons coach Jim Mora said both players would be listed as questionable for next week’s home game against Dallas.
