Unbeaten Bruins barely win

No. 1 UCLA survived its first serious challenge of the season with solid defense and the late scoring touch of Arron Afflalo.

Josh Shipp scored 18 points and Afflalo had eight of his 13 in the final 9 minutes as the Bruins held off No. 6 Texas A&M 65-62 Saturday afternoon in the John R. Wooden Classic.

Darren Collison added 15 points, but had six of the 13 turnovers committed by the Bruins (8-0).

Acie Law scored 21 points for Texas A&M (7-2), which controlled the boards 34-23 and outshot UCLA in the second half. Dominique Kirk added 12 points for the Aggies and Joseph Jones had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Texas A&M came into the game leading the country in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 32.2 percent. The Bruins shot 49 percent for the game.

(2) Pittsburgh 70, Buffalo 67: At Amherst, N.Y., Aaron Gray scored 19 points and added 11 rebounds helping the Panthers (10-0) overcome an 11-point deficit and pull out a victory over the Bulls (6-4).

Levance Fields, who had 11 points, sealed the win with a layup at the buzzer.

(3) North Carolina 94, High Point 69: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Tyler Hansbrough had 24 points and the Tar Heels (7-1) gave coach Roy Williams his 500th career victory, a rout of the Panthers (6-4).

Reyshawn Terry added 11 points for the Tar Heels.Arizona Reid had 26 points and Mike Jefferson added 14 for High Point.

(4) Alabama 92, Alabama St. 58: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Richard Hendrix had a career-high 34 points on 15-of-19 shooting to help the Crimson Tide (8-1) coast past the Hornets (2-5).

Alonzo Gee added 16 points for the Crimson Tide.

(5) Ohio St., Cleveland St. 57: At Columbus, Ohio, despite foul trouble that limited him to 23 minutes, Greg Oden had 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, three blocked shots and a steal in his first collegiate start as the Buckeyes (8-1) beat the Vikings (5-6).

Othello Hunter led Ohio State with a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds.

J’Nathan Bullock had 21 points and Joe Davis added 12 for Cleveland State (5-6),

(7) Duke 69, George Mason 53: At Durham, N.C., DeMarcus Nelson scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Blue Devils (9-1) past the Patriots (4-4).

Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell each scored 13 points for George Mason.

(10) Wichita St. 83, Wyoming 69: At Casper, Wyo., Kyle Wilson scored 19 points, including two big baskets in the second half, and the Shockers (7-0) held off the Cowboys (7-2).

Matt Braeuer scored 18 points for the Shockers.

(11) Wisconsin 70, (17) Marquette 66: At Milwaukee, Alando Tucker scored a season-high 28 points and the Badgers (9-1) withstood a late rally to beat the Golden Eagles (9-2).

Marcus Landry had 11 points and career-high four blocks, while Kammron Taylor finished with 13 points for the Badgers.

(12) Kansas 68, Toledo 58: At Kansas City, Mo., Brandon Rush broke out of his shooting slump with a hot first half and the Jayhawks (8-2) overcame the Rockets (2-5) for a victory in probably its last game in Kemper Arena.

Rush hit four of his first five 3-point attempts against the Rockets and finished with 19 points.

(14) Arizona 69, San Diego St. 48: At San Diego, with star freshman Chase Budinger held to only five points, Marcus Williams had 21 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Wildcats (7-1) to a win over the Aztecs (8-2).

Aztecs senior guard Brandon Heath had 14 points.

Indiana St 72, (15) Butler 64: At Terre Haute, Ind., Gabe Moore scored a career-high 24 points and almost single-handedly ruined the nation’s most surprising start by leading the Sycamores (5-3) to a victory over the Bulldogs (10-1)

Mike Green had 18 points for Butler, which shot an uncharacteristic 41.5 percent from the field and was only 8 of 28 from 3-point range.

(16) Memphis 82, Mississippi 70: At Memphis, Tenn., Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 17 points and Jeremy Hunt added 16 to lead the Tigers (7-2) to a victory over the Rebels (7-2)

Antonio Anderson had 14 points for Memphis, while Joey Dorsey grabbed 10 rebounds.

Clarence Sanders had 18 points and Todd Abernathy added 16 for Ole Miss.

(21) Syracuse 79, Colgate 52: At Syracuse, N.Y., Demetris Nichols matched his career high with 28 points and the Orange (8-2) beat the Raiders (4-4).

Andy Rautins matched his career high with 13 points and Terrence Roberts had 12 points and eight rebounds for Syracuse.

Kyle Chones had a career-high 18 points and Alex Woodhouse had nine for Colgate.

(22) Oklahoma St. 75, Ball St. 56: At San Diego, Mario Boggan scored 24 points and the Cowboys (11-0) used a 16-0 run to remain undefeated, beating the Cardinals (3-6).

Skip Mills lead Ball State with 15 points.

Creighton 73, (24) Xavier 67: At Omaha, Neb., Anthony Tolliver scored 17 points and the Blue Jays (7-2) used a strong defensive effort to beat the Musketeers (7-2).

Nate Funk added 15 points and Dane Watts had 10 rebounds for Creighton.

Vanderbilt 73, (25) Georgia Tech 64: At Nashville, Tenn., Shan Foster scored 25 points and Derrick Byars added 18, as the Commodores (5-3) came away with a win over the Yellow Jackets (6-3).

Thaddeus Young had 19 points Georgia Tech.
