POCATELLO, Idaho – Senior guard David Schroeder scored a season-high 27 points, including 21 in the first half, and Idaho State used a white-hot start to overwhelm Idaho 82-61 Wednesday night in a non-conference men’s basketball game.

Idaho State (3-5) opened the game with a 16-3 run and led 22-6 at the 15:42 mark of the first half. ISU went 9 of 11 from the field during that stretch and forced Idaho (1-7) into four quick turnovers.

Idaho State led 37-10 midway through the first half and held a 48-26 advantage at halftime.

“I thought we had done a really good job of preparing our guys in their knowledge of where they needed to be when the ball was in certain places on the floor,” Idaho coach George Pfeifer said. “We were literally supposed to be in no-cover, no-leave (with Schroeder) and what (Idaho State) did was run him from one wing to the other off a screen and when he caught the ball we were 6 feet behind him.”

In the second half, Idaho slowly worked its way back. A 13-0 run midway through the period, capped by a 3-pointer from Keoni Watson, cut Idaho State’s lead to 61-51. Watson finished with 20 points despite not playing in the first half for disciplinary reasons.

Idaho could get no closer, as Idaho State finished the game by outscoring Idaho 21-10. ISU shot 72 percent from the field for the game, including going 12 of 20 from 3-point range.

Idaho only hit 37 percent of its shots.

Logan Kinghorn added 21 points and seven rebounds for ISU, while point guard Akbar Abdul-Ahad had a career-high 12 assists.

Idaho point guard O.J. Avworo scored nine points, handed out five assists and committed no turnovers in 40 minutes.
