Giants sign Landeta, 44, as backup punter

From Wire Reports The Spokesman-Review

The New York Giants signed 44-year-old punter Sean Landeta as insurance Saturday because it is uncertain if Jeff Feagles can play in the NFC East showdown against Dallas because of a knee injury.

Landeta played on both of the Giants’ Super Bowl championship teams under Bill Parcells, Dallas’ coach.

Feagles, 40, hopes to play in his 300th consecutive NFL game today. He is set to join Atlanta’s Morten Anderson (361), Gary Anderson (353), George Blanda (340) and Jerry Rice (303) as the only players in history to appear in 300 games.

If Feagles can’t play, Landeta will punt for the Giants for the first time since 1993. He last played in the league last season, appearing in five games for Philadelphia.

Feagles and Landeta are the two most prolific punters in NFL history.

Feagles’ 1,487 punts place him first in history. Landeta is second with 1,401. Feagles has 61,881 punting yards, Landeta is second with 60,707.

Redskins sign kicker

The Washington Redskins signed Shaun Suisham from the practice squad, giving the team an alternative to struggling kicker Nick Novak for today’s game against Atlanta.

Novak has made only 5 of 10 field-goal attempts this season, and his kickoffs have been short. Suisham was primarily a kickoff specialist earlier this season with Dallas. He was signed to the Redskins practice squad Tuesday.
