Mariners, Guillen make a deal

An excited-sounding Jose Guillen was celebrating with friends and family in the Dominican Republic on Saturday night after reaching a one-year deal to become the new Mariners’ right fielder.

The deal is contingent upon Guillen passing a physical, set for this afternoon in Orlando, Fla., site of the annual baseball winter meetings. Guillen is trying to revive a career that stalled last year with the Washington Nationals, when he missed the second half of the season after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his elbow.

“I’m so grateful to the Mariners for giving me this opportunity,” said Guillen, who is visiting family in his native country and will fly to Orlando on Sunday morning. “I know that when I’m healthy, I can still hit in this league.”

Guillen said the idea is for him to become the team’s full-time right fielder, with Ichiro shifting to center.

Guillen, a career .272 hitter with 143 home runs, has played for seven teams.

Lincoln 201, OSU-Marion 78

Sami Wylie made an NCAA-record 21 3-pointers and finished with 69 points to help Lincoln University set a Division III scoring record in a 201-78 win over Ohio State-Marion in Salem, W.Va.

Lincoln’s total topped the Division III mark set in January 2005 by Redlands, which scored 172 points against La Sierra. Wylie’s 21 3-pointers topped Jeff Clement’s 19 3-pointers for Division III Grinnell against Illinois College on Feb. 18, 1998.

Then-Division II Troy has the all-time NCAA record with 258 points against DeVry, Ga., on Jan. 12, 1992.

The margin of victory for Lincoln also was an NCAA record.
