Sing-Along ‘Messiah’

For almost 100 years, First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., has offered a Community Sing-Along “Messiah” during the Christmas season.

This year, it will be Sunday.

If you want to join in the singing, there is a rehearsal at 4 p.m. If you want to just come and listen, the concert begins at 6 p.m.

Singers will practice the choruses of Handel’s Messiah and will be joined by professional soloists and an orchestra.

Dessert Theater

The First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N. Country Homes Blvd., is presenting “I’ll be Home for Christmas,” its annual Dessert Theater Christmas program, today at 2 and 7 p.m.

The concert will feature music from the 1940s Big Band era and will tell the story of a family preparing for the holidays as they hear news reports of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The performances will also include Christmas carols and vintage radio commercials.

Coffee and pie will be served. Admission is $5, but those who can’t afford a ticket may call the church office at (509) 467-8986.

More concerts

“The Cathedral and the Arts is presenting “Place of the Blest,” a holiday concert featuring the Spokane Youth Orchestra, the Eastern Washington University Chamber Choir and the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus.

Concerts will be Sunday at 4 and 7 p.m. at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave.

“The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside Ave., is hosting a benefit concert Sunday at 3 p.m. featuring the HARK quartet.

Admission will be a donation of food or cash to benefit the Spokane Valley Food Bank.

“The Whitworth College Bell Choir will perform Advent music Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. service at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan Ave.

Felsorakos Celebration

Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington St., is celebrating the town of Felsorakos, Transylvania, on Sunday during its 10:30 a.m. service.

The church helped contribute to a water project in the town. The service will include a discussion about the project and a presentation of quilts from the Felsorakos women’s group and carved plaques.

At 11:45 a.m., there will be a lunch of Transylvanian foods, a Hungarian dance performance and a short movie, “Transylvanian Women.”

Special prayer services

Central Lutheran Church, 512 S. Bernard St., is offering “Central Your Week at Central,” an opportunity to pray aloud with a leader from noon to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays starting next week.

The church is also offering Advent devotional time Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The evening will include singing of the “Holden Evening Prayer.”

Sales and bazaars

Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave., is presenting its annual craft bazaar today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Windfall, 1024 S. Perry St., is presenting a bag sale today from noon to 3 p.m.

The thrift shop will provide bags, and anything shoppers can stuff into them will cost only $5. Proceeds will benefit the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

“The Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort Wright Drive, is holding its fourth annual Alternative Gift Fair Sunday from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Many people like to donate money to charity instead of buying presents, and this is your opportunity to do just that. Charities that will have representatives on hand include Heifer International, the Spokane Neighborhood Action Program, and Habitat for Humanity.

Liberty Park United Methodist Church, 1526 E. 11th Ave., is presenting its annual Women of Liberty Park church bazaar and luncheon Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include a choice of potato, minestrone and chicken noodle soups for $4.

Items for sale include quilts, Christmas decorations, crafts and more. Proceeds will help send kids to camp and support mission projects such as Hope for the Children of Africa.

Classes

“The Ministry Institute, 405 E. Sinto Ave., is presenting “Listening for God’s Voice – in Silence” today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The class will discuss ways to deepen the stillness in one’s life and will include some time for silent reflection.
