Huskies move on at NCAA volleyball

After dropping the first set of Thursday’s first-round NCAA match to Colorado State (20-10), sixth-seeded Washington (26-4) stole a 3-1 win over CSU in Boulder, Colo., paced by Stevie Mussie’s 22 kills and 13 assists.

CSU nearly took game two after two kills by Mekana Barnes put the Rams down 27-26, but UW hung on to win 30-26.

The Huskies advance to the round of 32 for the fifth straight season and will today face Colorado, which defeated No. 19 New Mexico State.

Women’s basketball

Washington State (1-5) dropped its third straight game as visiting Montana State (3-3) earned a 70-64 non-conference win.

MSU led the entire game, but the Cougars pulled within one point three times in the second half.

Dani Montgomery hit two free throws to pull WSU within one point with 2:25 to go, but Nubia Garcia responded with six consecutive points for the Bobcats.

Alyssa Nelson had a game-high 17 points for MSU. Kate Benz scored 10 with eight rebounds for WSU.

“Heather Bowman scored 23 points as Gonzaga (6-3) posted a 74-58 win over visiting Seattle Pacific (3-1) in non-conference play.

Stephanie Hawk and Michelle Elliott of the Bulldogs combined for 24 points and Katy Ridenour was 2 for 2 on 3-pointers.

Kelsey Hill paced SPU with 18 points and seven rebounds.

“Kristin Peoples scored nine of her 29 points in overtime as the Kent State Golden Flashes (2-3) registered an 81-78 non-conference win over visiting Washington, capping an 18-point comeback after halftime.

With the score tied at 76 in overtime, Peoples nailed a 3-pointer and added two free throws with 5.2 seconds left to seal the win. She and La’Kia Stewart combined to score 33 second-half points.

Cameo Hicks scored 29 points for Washington (3-3). Emily Florence grabbed a season-high eight rebounds for UW and redshirt sophomore Stefanie Clark scored a career-high 13 points.

Amateur boxing

The Washington State Silver Gloves Championships will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday at the East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone Street. Admission is $10. Children 5 years and younger are free.
