Race through time

Thousands of runners are headed your way next Sunday as Bloomsday celebrates its 30th anniversary. Bloomsday founder Don Kardong estimates the milestone celebration will bring about 45,000 runners, walkers and joggers to downtown Spokane, as racers wind their way through a slightly modified course that ends on the north side of the Monroe Street Bridge. The regular registration deadline has passed, but late-Bloomers still can register for an additional fee; see the “race details” box for more information. (Do you really want to hear that the first Bloomday registration fee was $3?) On the back page of this section, in a keepsake poster of sorts, staff writer Hilary Kraus and artist Molly Quinn take a look back at the fads and fashions of Bloomsday 1977 and how it compares to this year’s race.
