Cougars strike for 13 runs to turn back Trojans

The Spokesman-Review

Zach McAngus had three hits, including his third home run of the season, as Washington State knocked off Southern Cal 13-7 in Pac-10 baseball action Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

The Cougars (28-16, 6-8) finished with 15 hits, and their 13 runs were the most by a WSU team in conference play since a 13-3 win over Cal at the end of the 2004 season.

Jeff Miller added three hits for WSU, while Jared Prince, Travis Coulter and Jay Miller each had two.

Cyle Hankerd went 3 for 4, including a two-run homer in the first inning, and finished with three RBIs for the Trojans (24-21, 10-7).

•Loyola Marymount only scored in two innings, but that was enough to knock off Gonzaga 6-3 in West Coast Conference play in Los Angeles.

LMU (20-27, 7-7) scored three times in the first and fourth innings to account for its offense.

Gonzaga (26-18, 7-7) got a home run from Darin Holcomb, his sixth, in the third, and RBI hits from Scott Campbell and Shawn Wayt in the fifth and eighth, respectively, for its scoring.

•Whitworth scored 14 runs in a doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran, but unfortunately for the Pirates, all 14 came in the second game.

Lutes pitcher Joe DiPietro threw a complete-game shutout as PLU (22-17, 12-11) beat Whitworth 1-0 in the opening game at Merkel Field.

In the second game, Joel Evans drove in six runs as the Pirates (19-19, 13-10 Northwest Conference) scored six times in the first to beat the Lutes 14-2.

•Arizona scored 12 times in the last two innings to turn a close game into a rout as the Wildcats (20-21, 6-8 Pac-10) crushed Washington (29-16, 7-7) 15-0 at Seattle.

•Mike Campo hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth as Community Colleges of Spokane (14-22, 9-11) posted a 7-6 win over Big Bend (23-12, 13-7) in the second game of a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader at Spokane Falls.

In the opener, Billy Rigsby (Shadle Park) went 3 for 5 with three RBIs as Big Bend knocked off the Sasquatch 9-5.

Softball

Jo Sonnett shined again as Whitworth used a two-run homer by Heather Case to take the opener of an important Northwest Conference doubleheader over Linfield at McMinnville, Ore.

Sonnett threw a complete-game 2-0 shutout, striking out eight and holding the NWC’s leading offense to four hits.

In the second game, Linfield freshman Brittany Miller threw a gem, striking out eight and holding the Pirates to three hits in a 2-1 win. Jenny Marshall drove home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for the Wildcats.

Should Whitworth (25-11, 20-6) sweep Linfield in today’s doubleheader, the Pirates would win the school’s first conference title.

All Linfield (28-7, 21-5) needs is a split of the twinbill to win its third straight conference championship and the NWC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

•Amber Fowler (Colville) totaled four home runs and 15 RBIs, and Morgan Thomsen (West Valley) also hit four home runs as fourth-ranked CC Spokane (27-7, 17-3) swept an NWAACC tripleheader from Columbia Basin (12-17, 7-14) in Pasco, Wash.

The Sasquatch finished the day with 14 total home runs en route to 16-1, 18-0 and 16-6 wins.
