Trojans defeat Cougars in series opener
Ian Kennedy threw eight solid innings, allowing just two runs, to lead USC to a 9-2 victory over Washington State to open a Pac-10 baseball series at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman on Friday.
Daniel Perales had three hits to lead the Trojans (24-20, 10-6), who snapped the Cougars’ four-game winning streak.
Jeff Miller, Jim Murphy and Travis Coulter each had two hits for Washington State (27-16, 5-8), which hit into three inning-ending double plays in the first five innings.
•Eric Farris hit his second double of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Loyola Marymount a 4-3 victory over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference game in Los Angeles.
Casey Gordon hit a double down the left-field line to tie the game for the Lions (19-27, 6-7) and set up Farris, who finished with three hits.
Zach Woodward had a pair of hits to lead the Bulldogs (26-17, 7-6).
•Tim Lincecum earned his NCAA-leading 10th victory of the season and school-record 28th of his career, striking out 11 in eight innings as Washington defeated Arizona (19-21, 5-8) 7-5 to open a Pac-10 series in Seattle. Brett Kaluza had three hits, including a triple, and two runs scored for the Huskies (29-15, 7-6).
Softball
Lacey Parry (Mead High) had two hits and Amber Fowler (Colville) hit her 17th home run of the season as fourth-ranked Community Colleges of Spokane defeated host Walla Walla 5-2 to open a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader.
In the nightcap, Parry hit 3 for 4 with a pair of two-run homers as the Sasquatch routed the Warriors (17-23, 11-9) 14-4 in five innings. Morgan Thomsen (West Valley) hit 4 for 4 and scored three times for CCS (24-7, 14-3), which scored eight runs in the second inning. Aimee Fitting (Lakeland) added two hits, including a two-run homer, and four RBIs.
Rowing
Loyola Marymount’s victory in the I-Eight race earned the Lions their first West Coast Conference women’s title in the WCC Rowing Championships in Lake Natoma, Calif.
LMU and nine-time defending champion Gonzaga each finished with 27 points, but the Lions won the tiebreaker with the victory in the premier race. LMU finished in 6 minutes, 38.8 seconds, defeating Gonzaga by 4.5 seconds.
The Bulldogs won the other two races, the II-Eight and I-Four, and Sarah Allison and Kari Durgan earned All-WCC honors for the second straight season.
