WSU names scholarship winners

Several area residents have been awarded scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year at Washington State University.

Christopher Aldrich is the recipient of a $1,000 Honors College M.E. and Maxine Johnson Scholarship. Aldrich, a 2003 graduate of Ferris High School, is the son of Mary and Roger Aldrich of Spokane. He is studying microbiology.

Janie Booth is the recipient of an $800 Jeri McDonald Scholarship from the Edward R. Murrow School of Communications. Booth, a 2003 graduate of Davenport High School, is the daughter of Bonnie and Warren Booth of Davenport. She is studying public relations.

Cara Erickson received a $1,000 Sidney R. Buckley and Daughter Honors Scholarship. Erickson, the daughter of Doris and Dale Erickson of Hunters, Wash., is a 2004 graduate of Columbia High School. She is studying pharmacy.

Molly Fuhs is a recipient of a $1,000 University Recognition Scholarship. Fuhs, a senior at Lewis and Clark High School, is the daughter of Valerie and Bryan Fuhs of Spokane.

Blake Herman is a recipient of a $1,000 University Recognition Scholarship. Herman, a senior at Lakeside High School, is the son of Nancy and Glenn Herman of Nine Mile Falls.

Ian Turner was awarded a $1,000 Honors College M.E. and Maxine Johnson Scholarship. Turner, the son of Brenda and Paul Turner of Hunters, Wash., is a 2002 graduate of Columbia High School. He is studying civil engineering.

Leah Kelsch was awarded a $1,000 Science Opportunity Scholarship. Kelsch, a graduate of Mead High School, is the daughter of Gail and Jack Kelsch of Colbert.

“ Army Pvt. Joshua Payne recently graduated from the Utilities Equipment Repairer Advanced Individual Training Course at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Payne, a 1997 graduate of Mead High School, is the son of Fred and Debbie Payne of Colbert.

“ Washington State University recently announced the winners of the third WSU College of Sciences Undergraduate Research poster competition. Fifty science majors displayed posters explaining their research on various topics.

Sheila Doyle of Spokane took first place in the biological sciences category. Cora Johnson of Spokane won second place in the physical sciences category. First place winners were awarded $400 and second place winners won $300.

“ Three area students were recently named to the fall 2005 dean’s list at Pacific Lutheran University. Students must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.5 to be named to the list. The students are: Kyle Duba, Rebecca Gant and Meredith Kanago, all of Veradale.

Idaho

“ Kristen Carey of Post Falls was recently given the Silver Award, the highest award given to Girl Scouts ages 11-17. Carey, a freshman at Post Falls High School, organized a neighborhood halloween carnival last year for her project.

“ The North Idaho Arbor Day committee recently announced the winners of its art contest to design a button for distribution on Arbor Day. The contest was open to middle school and high school students in the Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Lakeland school districts.

Chrissie Camster, a junior at Coeur d’Alene High School, took first place. Austin Brown of Coeur d’Alene High School took second place, and Ashley Boles of Post Falls High School placed third.
