GSL track winds down
There are two big meets on the Greater Spokane League schedule this afternoon.
On the boys’ side, East Valley and Mead are at Clarkston, with the winner earning the top spot in the National Division and the right to host next week’s championship. The field is set with Central Valley and Lewis and Clark from the American Division joining EV and Mead.
On the girls’ side, Ferris is at North Central, with the winner joining Mead in the championship Wednesday. Barring a major upset, Mt. Spokane and Shadle Park are in and Shadle will host.
One match left in GSL golf
Next week will be the final league boys and girls meet in the GSL season, with the boys competing Tuesday at The Fairways and the girls on Monday at Esmeralda. On the boys’ side, Clarkston’s Joel Dahmen is the top individual, averaging 71.25 strokes, with Central Valley’s Nick Grigsby and Shadle Park’s Tyler Nelson both also less than 74 per competition. Mead leads Ferris 51.5-48.5 in the league standings.
For the girls, Gonzaga Prep’s Annie Brophy averages 75.25 to lead the league and Mead sophomore Lauren Howell is the only other golfer less than 80 (76.75). Lewis and Clark and Mead are deadlocked atop the league standings.
Around the leagues
Great Northern: The baseball season ends a week from Friday, and there’s still a lot to be decided. After Tuesday’s action, four teams were separated by one game in the loss column: Pullman (7-3), Colville (9-4), Lakeside (9-4) and Medical Lake (8-4). Colville plays at Pullman in a doubleheader on Friday and Lakeside is at Medical Lake for a pair Saturday.
Northeast A: If anyone’s going to catch Kettle Falls’ softball team, it has to start this week. Friday, Kettle (7-6, 5-1) hosts Colfax (4-5, 2-2), which is tied for second with Freeman (7-6, 3-3). Colfax handed Kettle its only league loss April 10, a 5-3 setback in the opener of a doubleheader. Freeman, which split a doubleheader at Colfax last Saturday, plays host to Newport (0-10, 0-4), also Friday.
Bi-County: Lind-Ritzville baseball needed a three-run, late-inning rally to avoid being swept and caught for first place by Liberty on Saturday. The Broncos (12-2, 9-1) have a two-game lead on the rest of the league and only two games left with a team with a winning record. … First place ought to be decided this week on the softball side, as leader Liberty (10-1, 8-0) has a doubleheader today at home against Davenport (9-4, 7-1) and another Saturday against visiting Odessa (10-1, 7-1).
Panorama: Northport is a win away from clinching a tie for the league baseball title, as the Mustangs (14-1, 12-0) have four games left and a three-game lead over everyone else in the loss column. … Two of the three teams that still have a shot at the Panorama title, Curlew and Selkirk, play a softball doubleheader at Ione on Friday. Inchelium (13-1) and Selkirk (11-1) are on top, with Curlew (10-2) right behind.
Whitman County: Colton (6-1) holds its spot atop the WCL baseball standings, despite a 13-10 loss to Garfield-Palouse (4-4) on Tuesday. The Wildcats will travel to Rosalia to face Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia (4-6) in a Saturday doubleheader. … Gar-Pal (3-1) will look to catch up with Asotin (4-1) in the league softball race with games against the bottom two teams in the league. The Vikings will host St. John-Endicott (0-7) on Saturday before facing LaCrosse-Washtucna (4-5) in Washtucna on Tuesday.
