CROP Walk will benefit food programs

Church World Service and the Interfaith Council of the Inland Northwest are presenting the annual CROP Hunger Walk.

Area Christians will gather to register for the walk Sunday at noon at Martin Centre on the Gonzaga University campus to raise funds, nonperishable food items and awareness of local and global hunger.

The walk begins at 1:30 p.m.

Since 1979, participants in the Spokane CROP Walk have raised over half a million dollars to benefit local and global hunger and education agencies.

Entertainment will be provided by the Angus Scott Bagpipe Band and the Rainbow Fiddle Kids.

Some of the local agencies that will benefit from the walk are the Spokane Second Harvest Food Bank, Mid-City Concerns Meals on Wheels, Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels, and the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Spokane. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds will benefit the local agencies.

‘Name of Jesus’ concert tour

Todd Agnew and Big Daddy Weave will headline The Name of Jesus concert May 4 at Faith Bible Church, 600 W. Cora Ave.

The concert’s opening acts are Nate Sallie and Jason Morant.

Peace activists to speak

Jerry Levin, former CNN Middle East Bureau chief and an American who was held hostage in Lebanon, and his wife, Sis, will speak on the topic, “The Piece Process Continues: The Struggle Against Myths, Propaganda and Annexation in Palestine and Israel,” at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 301 S. Freya St., Friday at 7 p.m.

The two, who still live in Palestine, will discuss nonviolent activism.

The event is free, but free-will offerings will be accepted.

Ethicist to speak on Iraq war

Lindy Scott, a professor of Spanish and Latin American studies at Wheaton College in Illinois, will speak on the topic, “The War in Iraq: A Christian Perspective from Latin America,” today from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Eric Johnston Center auditorium, Room 233, on the campus of Whitworth College, 300 W. Hawthorne Road.

‘The Amanuensis’

Gary Hotchkiss, an associate pastor at Trinity Baptist Church, 6528 N. Monroe St., has written the play, “The Amanuensis.” It will be performed at the church Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 9 and 11 a.m.

The play is centered around a young Roman man in 62 A.D. who gets an unusual and life-changing job opportunity from a stranger.

Book reading

Lynn Caruso, local author of “Blessing the Animals: Prayers and Ceremonies to Celebrate God’s Creatures, Wild and Tame” will read from her book Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Aunties Bookstore, 402 W. Main Ave.

The book is a collection of blessings, poems and prayers that honor animals and includes the writings of seven other local writers.

Caruso also will sign copies of her book.

Timbuktu lecture

The Rev. Nouh Yattara of the Kel Tamasheq ethnic group will speak about Timbuktu, a town of 30,000 in West Africa, on Tuesday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Service Station, 9315 N. Nevada St.

Yattara also will speak about how he converted to Christianity from Islam and about his ministry.

Auction and square dance

Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 N. Gleneden Drive, is presenting “Sail into Spring,” an auction and square dance, on Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m.

The event will include both oral and silent auctions featuring vacations, handmade gifts and antiques.

Proceeds will benefit the church’s high school mission to Louisiana and the church.
