WSU downs Gonzaga 9-6
Travis Coulter and Jared Prince each had three hits to lead Washington State to a 9-6 non-conference baseball win over Gonzaga at Avista Stadium Tuesday evening. Coulter and Greg Lagreid each had two-run singles in the Cougars’ four-run fifth inning, which turned out to be the game’s decisive runs.
Reese Baker allowed one run in two innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season for WSU (27-15). Aaron McGuinness, Jackson Brennan and Bobby Carlson all hit home runs for the Bulldogs (26-16). WSU’s win evened the season series between the two schools at three apiece.
•Jon Buettner had two hits, a grand slam and a two-run double, to lead Lewis-Clark State (36-3) in a 16-7 non-conference win over Whitworth (18-18) in Lewiston.
Golf
Washington State’s Anastasia Kostina fired a 3-over-par second-round score of 75 and is in a tie for seventh place at the women’s Pacific-10 Championship at Oro Valley CC in Tucson, Ariz. UCLA leads the tournament, which concludes today, at 578. The Cougars are ninth at 615. Washington is sixth at 608.
•Washington is at 6-over-par 361 after the third day of the men’s Pacific-10 Championship in Palm Desert, Calif., placing them in second place, six strokes behind leader UCLA. The Huskies have three golfers in the top-10, led by Erik Olson who is tied for third place at 2 under par. UW won last season’s championship after rallying from last place after the first day. Washington State is ninth at 373 at the Big Horn Country Club.
Basketball
Texas high school star O.J. Avworo has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the University of Idaho. Avworo is a 6-0, 180-pound point guard from Houston. where he is a senior at Alief Elsik High School. Avworo averaged 10.8 points, 11.3 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game as a senior and was an honorable mention All-State selection.
