A blaze destroyed a detached garage and two vehicles Tuesday morning at a rental home in Spokane Valley.

One of the renters told fire investigators he’d been working on a car in the garage the night before, Fire Department spokesman Bill Clifford said. The man said when he started the vehicle about 7 a.m. Tuesday, he noticed something glowing behind it and saw flames crawling up the garage wall.

The renters tried to extinguish the fire by dousing the flames with buckets of water, Clifford said, but the blaze got out of hand.

Firefighters found the detached garage at 5219 E. Fourth Ave. fully engulfed in flames, Clifford said. No one was hurt in the fire, and the blaze was confined to the garage area.

All the contents were destroyed, but a damage estimate was not available.
