Gonzaga rallies to beat S.F.
Scott Campbell’s second sacrifice fly of the game brought home Alex Parrott in the bottom of the eighth inning and gave Gonzaga a 9-8 victory over San Francisco in a West Coast Conference baseball game Sunday at Avista Stadium.
The Bulldogs (26-15, 7-5) rallied for four runs in their final two trips to the plate to win the three-game series and tie the Dons (25-18, 7-5) for second place in the conference.
Bobby Carlson hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 7 in the bottom of the seventh, then Darin Holcomb (Shadle Park High) hit an RBI single to precede Campbell’s play in the eighth.
•True freshman Jared Prince led Washington State on both sides of the plate as the Cougars (26-15) defeated Northern Colorado 5-2 to complete a non-conference sweep in Greeley, Colo.
Prince threw six solid innings, striking out three Bears (14-15), to earn his fifth win of the season. He also went 3 for 5 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.
•Zach Clem hit 3 for 5 with three RBIs – including his Pac-10 Conference-leading 17th home run of the season – and finished a single short of the cycle as Washington defeated No. 22 USC (23-18, 9-6) 7-2 to win a three-game series in Los Angeles.
Curt Rindal also had three hits for the Huskies (27-15, 6-6), and former closer Elliott Cribby allowed just one earned run in 61/3 innings in his second collegiate start.
•Caleb Reaber hit a three-run double to cap a four-run ninth inning that blew open the game as Whitworth defeated Puget Sound (14-20, 11-10) 7-2 to complete a three-game Northwest Conference series in Tacoma.
Van Lierman had three hits for the Pirates (18-17, 12-9), and Steve Hare threw eight-plus innings to earn his sixth win of the season.
Softball
Molly Barnes capped a Willamette rally from a five-run deficit with a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Bearcats an 8-7 victory over Whitworth to open a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Salem, Ore.
In the nightcap, Whitworth (24-10, 19-5) took advantage of six Willamette (17-13, 13-7) errors to earn an 8-6 victory. Seven different Pirates had hits, led by Lindsay Davis’ two-run homer to open up an 8-1 lead in the fifth inning.
