Red Wings win double-overtime thriller
Kirk Maltby scored his second goal of the night 2:39 into double overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series on Friday in Detroit.
Edmonton’s Dwayne Roloson made 54 saves while Manny Legace finished with 23 for the Red Wings.
Maltby ended the game that lasted 3 1/2 hours with a long shot from outside the right circle that was deflected past Roloson by the stick of Edmonton teammate Rem Murray.
Predators 4, Sharks 3: Adam Hall scored the go-ahead goal at 12:06 of the third period by redirecting a shot by Paul Kariya, who assisted on all four of Nashville’s power-play goals in the Predators’ win over San Jose in the opener of the first-round Western Conference series in Nashville, Tenn.
Mike Sillinger scored and had an assist, and Martin Erat and rookie defenseman Shea Weber both netted their first career playoff goals for Nashville.

Kings turn to Lombardi
Dean Lombardi considers himself a team constructor. He plans more of a remodeling job in Los Angeles as the new president and general manager of the Kings.
Lombardi, introduced at a news conference, said he doesn’t intend to dismantle the Kings. His goal is to improve what is already there and add talent.
“I chose the Kings for a number of reasons. First off, I’m a builder, and I see the foundation put in place by Dave Taylor,” he said.
“People sometimes come in and make things look as bad as possible, to paint themselves as heroes. But that’s not the case here.”
