EVHS students garner art awards
Award-winning artists continue to flourish at East Valley High School.
EVHS students took top honors this year in the Educational Service District 101 annual high school art competition.
Senior Erin Fredrick won the Superintendent’s Best of Show Choice Award. Her pastel drawing of orchids was purchased for $2,000 by the ESD to be placed on permanent display at its headquarters. ESD provides cooperative and informational services to local school districts.
Also, four EV students took first-place ESD awards and will be moving on to Olympia to compete for state. They include: freshman Amanda Baggarley with an abstract clay sculpture, freshman Parker Pierce with an abstract prisma color drawing, and junior Christine Strong with two first-place awards, one an acrylic painting of old farm machinery and the second a pastel self-portrait.
Junior Mary Jane Dunphe received a second place with her pastel self-portrait. Senior Cassie Maier also received a second-place award with a graphite drawing of a koi fish. Third place awards were given to EV sophomore Samantha Hardin for her pastel self-portrait and Paige Pedersen for her pastel drawing of her cello.
Honorable mentions went to senior Sean Cope with his acrylic painting of angels and demons, and Fredrick placed for a pastel drawing.
Central Valley High School also had ESD winners: Senior Dane Knudson took a regional first place for a sculpture of his house called, “Home Sweet Home.” Junior Laura Murphy won a second-place award for a watercolor.
In addition, East Valley students brought home the gold in the annual Junior Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest. Senior Eric McCarthy received first place in the state in his age category. This is McCarthy’s second consecutive year of success. He won the first-place award last year as well. Seniors Cassie Maier and Casey Dunken received the second-place awards for the state.
