New principal for Betz Elementary named
Cheney Public Schools has selected Kent Martin as the new principal for Betz Elementary School.
Martin will succeed Kathy Clayton, who has been principal at the school since 1999.
Martin has been a school administrator, serving as an elementary and middle school principal in the Battle Ground School District in southwestern Washington for the past seven years.
He is scheduled to visit classrooms at Betz Elementary on Friday and will begin his new position in August.
He’s a 1993 graduate of Western Washington University and earned a master’s degree from Washington State University/Vancouver in 1998. He currently is working on a doctorate in education through Washington State University.
Ferris fundraisers
The Ferris High School spring rummage sale and car wash will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the school, 3020 E. 37th Ave.
Proceeds will go to the school’s alcohol-free graduation party for the senior class.
St. Michael’s auction
St. Michael’s Academy is holding its 10th annual auction April 29 at the school, 8500 N. St. Michaels Road.
The event features a live and silent auction, appetizers, dinner and drinks. Doors open at 4 p.m.
Proceeds will help update textbooks and the school library.
Tickets are $25, and the deadline to purchase them is Monday.

St. George’s play
The St. George’s Upper School drama students will perform “The Rivals” at 7 p.m. next Thursday through April 29 in Founders Theater on the school’s campus, 2929 W. Waikiki Road. Admission is free.
In addition, the school’s Gilbert Art Gallery will feature the works of Upper School Advance Placement arts students. The exhibit opens at noon Monday and runs through May 2.
Home-school program
Northwest Christian Home Education Services will offer an open house at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school dining hall at the Colbert campus, 5104 E. Bernhill Road.
The open house and pre-enrollment night will present home-school families with information about the program, which provides a personalized, parent-involved education with a biblical worldview.
The program serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
