Fun run dedicated to second-grader
Deer Park Elementary School’s annual Fast Run is dedicated this year to Mackenzie Rowley, a second-grader at the school.
Mackenzie has JDM (juvenile dermatomyositis) and photosensitivity, an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the muscles and skin in her body. She suffered from myositis in both her thigh muscles. After several harsh treatments she is now in medication remission. There is currently no cure for this disease.
Every student who runs the race will receive a certificate of accomplishment and a running man token at a post-assembly celebration at the school.
The run will be at 12:45 p.m. April 28 and promotes exercise, the fun of lifelong fitness and beating diseases such as JDM.
Student wins writing award
Thomas Wolfe, a sophomore at Mead High School, has been named the winner in his age group for the 2006 Jacob Friedman Holocaust Creative Writing Contest sponsored by the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center. There were more than 300 entries statewide in the grades nine and 10 category.
Wolfe will receive a $400 savings bond and will be honored at the Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration Monday. His winning essay will be published in a booklet to be distributed there and posted online.
Zags help in books giveaway
Tonight one lucky Bemiss Elementary student will receive the 50,000th book from the Page Ahead grant through Avista. Page Ahead has been providing Spokane children with new books since 1994.
The event, “Books and Basketball,” will take place from 6 to 8 tonight at the school, 2323 E. Bridgeport Ave.
The evening will include new books for all Bemiss students, stories read by Gonzaga men’s basketball players, snacks and recognition of Page Ahead’s community partners and volunteers.
Over the years, Page Ahead has provided new books for at-risk children, helped parents read with their children and promoted community involvement in literacy.
‘Theatre Italiano’
The Mead High School Theatre department presents “Theatre Italiano,” an audience-participation event.
The evening of dinner theater takes place next Thursday with a spaghetti dinner served as the theater students entertain with Italian music, jokes, skits and more.
Seating begins at 6:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 in the school’s mall.
Advance tickets are $10, available at the school’s business office or $12 at the door.

St. Michael’s auction
St. Michael’s Academy is holding its 10th annual auction on April 29 at the school, 8500 N. St. Michaels Road.
The event features a live and silent auction, appetizers, dinner and drinks. Doors will open at 4 p.m. Proceeds will help update textbooks and the school library.

St. George’s presents ‘The Rivals’
The St. George’s Upper School drama students will perform “The Rivals” at 7 p.m. next Thursday through April 29 in Founders Theater on the school’s campus, 2929 W. Waikiki Road. Admission is free.
In addition, the school’s Gilbert Art Gallery will feature the works of Upper School Advanced Placement Arts students. The exhibit opens at noon Monday and runs through May 2.
Open house for home school program
Northwest Christian Home Education Services will offer an open house at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school dining hall at the Colbert Campus, 5104 E. Bernhill Road.
The open house and pre-enrollment night will present home school families with information about the program, which provides a personalized, parent-involved education with a biblical worldview. The program serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
