Rojas resigns after 10 years as Ferris’ girls hoops coach

Art Rojas, girls basketball coach at Ferris for the past 10 years, has given his resignation.

The surprise announcement comes after Rojas compiled a 149-90 record with the Saxons. His teams were a district playoff fixture and made two state trips, finishing third and eighth.

He said he preferred not to elaborate on the reasons he made his decision.

“One door closes another opens, so to speak,” said Rojas. “Basically, it was time to pursue other avenues personally and professionally.”

His overall record, including four years at Moses Lake, is 184-145. Thirteen of those 14 teams reached postseason

While at Ferris, Rojas’ teams finished among the Greater Spokane League’s top four six times with one league title and a second place.

This season was the Saxons’ first losing GSL record under Rojas and only time they didn’t play in postseason, although they had gone 30-36 overall the past three years.

“He was a good coach and I’m very sorry to accept his letter of resignation,” said Assistant Principal for Activities Bob Crabb. “He’s done a great job with kids and the program and he’s a classy person.”

Rojas indicated that he would like to continue in coaching at another school.

“I think over the last 10 years the record speaks for itself. I know I do things the right way, so I’m hopeful,” Rojas said. “It’s sad to see something change, but in this case change will be good.”
