Dorothy Dean Favorite: Spoonburgers
Beth Barnes picked the stickiest page in her Dorothy Dean collection to help her decide which recipe was most favored at her house.
“I have a Dorothy Dean cookbook from either 1969 or ‘70 and I would be hard pressed to give you a favorite recipe, as I use it all the time. It’s right up there with my 1965 Betty Crocker cookbook,” she said. “I seem to use the old ones more than any of the new ones I have.”
There were three recipes on the page with stars, but since Favorite Spoonburgers was stained with ketchup it was the recipe she decided to share, Barnes wrote in an e-mail message.
Favorite Spoonburgers
2 pounds ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup minced celery
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1 clove garlic, minced

2 tablespoons salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon chili powder
12 hamburger buns
In large skillet, brown beef, onion, celery and green pepper, adding fat if necessary. Combine remaining ingredients (except buns); stir into meat mixture. Cover; simmer about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over toasted split buns.
