CV splits with Mt. Spokane

Coming off spring break, the Pasco Invitational is two days away and there was a biting headwind in the backstretch.

Central Valley boys never thought about that, just the one-point loss to Lewis and Clark two weeks ago.

At CV’s Sig T. Hansen Field the Bears won 13 of 17 events to hand Mt. Spokane its first loss, 93-52 in a Greater Spokane League track meet Thursday afternoon that was expected to be much closer.

The Wildcats girls, however, put together a 23-4 advantage in the throws to cruise past the Bears 93-57. Samantha Damiano won the shot put and discus and Anna Banks led a sweep in the javelin.

In every key matchup, the CV boys came through.

It was Sean Coyle in the 1,600-meter run, blasting past a pair of Wildcats at the top of the home stretch to win with a personal record of 4 minutes, 23.9 seconds. He later cruised in the 3,200 (9:53.1). The high jump and triple jumps were also critical with Michael Williams and Patrick Metzger (wind-aided, area-best 43 feet, 4 inches), respectively, winning for the Bears. Derek Schuh took the 100 with a wind-aided area-best of 10.7 seconds and the 200 (22.4) and contributed to a relay sweep.

C.E. Kaiser, who first won the shot put, came back to edge league-leader Tim Naylor by 25 inches in the discus with a PR of 148-9.

“Coach said they have a really good thrower,” Kaiser said. “If he goes 150, go with him, beat him by an inch. I wanted to set a high standard first.”

After a slow start, the Mt. Spokane girls improved on the track. Hurdlers Sam Patrick, Grace Evans and Chelsea Padrta were good for a 17-1 advantage and distance ace Megan O’Reilly won the 1,600 (5:48.8) and 3,200 (11:50.4). But it was sophomore Rebecca Craig’s surprising win in the 200 (27.1) that was the highlight.

“We had planned to get second place and Averi Hallman was supposed to get second, so there wasn’t a lot of pressure on me,” Craig said. “I had to run in the outside lane, which was kind of yucky. The team didn’t put pressure on me, it was inside. We lost both relays and we didn’t do too well in the 100.”
