Citizen call: Where is credit due?

The Spokesman-Review

Do good by stealth, and blush to find it fame. – Alexander Pope

The problem with most local heroes is that they don’t announce themselves. Maybe it’s the humility that propels them to pursue good works in service of others. Maybe it’s the positive self-image that stems from their uncommon devotion.

Whatever the reason, The Uncommoners in our midst can be difficult to find. Unlike those who make the daily headlines, they don’t betray themselves with obvious clues such as sirens and subpoenas.

Without your help, it’s going to be difficult for us to embarrass them, to make them blush, to force them to bask in the uncomfortable glare of public praise.

In short, The Spokesman-Review needs you to rat out the best people you know.

Last year, the editorial board honored Shannon Sullivan as our citizen contributor of the year. Given the constant headlines about Jim West, she was easy to find.

But being a newsmaker is not a qualification, and this year we want to honor more people. The categories are: citizen activist, business person, government, nonprofit, life achievement.

So, please, drop a dime on worthy citizen contributors by sending in your nominations. We’ll take care of the rest.
